All Island Essay Competition: 2009

The PCCSL along with the Ministry of Education conducted an All Island Essay Competition in all the three languages for the third year. The first part of the competition was conducted by the Ministry of Education where Grade 10 and 11 students took part. Those who were placed first, second and third in each of the nine Provinces were selected by the PCCSL for the second part of the programme. The essay topics were sent to the students who had to write a 750-1000 word essay in the presence of their principal who would then certify it and send it to the PCCSL. In all 44 essays (S-20, T-09, E-15) were received. The prize giving was held on December 22 at 10 am in the Auditorium of the Sri Lanka Press Institute. The Chief Guest was Dispute Resolution Council (DRC), Chairman Sam Wijesinha and the Guest of Honor was Mrs. Maheshi Weerasuriya, Director of Education, English Department of the Ministry of Education. The prizes were distributed by Mr. Wijesinha, Mrs. Weerasuriya, Mr. Sundara Nihathamani de Mel, Editor, Irida Lakbima and Member of the Board of Directors of the PCCSL, Mr. Pramod de Silva, Associate Editor, Daily News and member of the DRC and Mr. Daya Lankapura, Deputy Editor Lakbima and Member of the DRC. Eight prize winners of the nine (three each from the Sinhala, Tamil and English language medium) attended the ceremony. The first prize was for Rs. 5,000, second Rs. 4,000 and third Rs.3,000.
